Overview

Rally your friends and join in the fun of designing ASIC hardware in the first annual Makerchip ASIC Design Showdown, 2025. You have all summer to develop your skills and design a circuit to compete against others for cash prizes or fun!

Introduction

Designing semiconductors has been a game for big corporations for far too long, requiring deep expertise and access to expensive electronic design automation software. In recent years, free and open-source advancements in electronic design automation (EDA) are rewriting the rules. The Makerchip IDE leverages open-source EDA tools to deliver a powerful yet approachable experience for hobbyists.

It's time to have a little fun in this new, democratized world of semiconductors. The Makerchip ASIC Design Showdown challenges anyone and everyone to put their ingenuity to the test. We invite you to join in and show yourself and the world what you are capable of!

How it works

We created a virtual arena using the Makerchip IDE. You design circuits to compete in this arena. Let's walk through an example.

Let's say the challenge is to compete in a four-in-a-row game. We would give you the arena below:

This is running in the Makerchip platform, controlled by two competing circuits. Each clock cycle, the circuit of the active player decides where to play next. Visualization of the play area shows the circuits' behavior in simulation, and the winner is revealed.

We provide a code template, loaded into the EDITOR tab, for you to develop your circuit. This template provides the visualization driven by some TL-Verilog circuitry. It gives you a place to write your code to drive the interface signals that play the game. You can configure the template to compete against other sample opponents we provide or other opponents you or others develop. Using this environment, you develop the best circuit you can. And then, on August 1, it's showtime!

This four-in-a-row game can be used as a practice challenge before the real challenge is issued on May 30th.

Timeline
